State of the Region: Performance Indicators
for the Buffalo-Niagara Region in the 21st Century
Released in 1999, the State of the Region project’s baseline report, State
of the Region: Performance Indicators for the Buffalo-Niagara Region in
the 21st Century, culminated a year-long effort by the University at Buffalo Regional Institute and more than 200 citizens and community
leaders. The first State of the Region report initiated this process of
monitoring and measuring performance and motivating action in areas central
to the competitive standing and quality of life in Buffalo Niagara. The

Introduction:
A review of the processes involved in assembling the first State of the
Region report.
Indicators:
The 1999 report compiles 98 indicators across 11 topic areas key to regional
quality of life and competitiveness. Each indicator features short-term
and long-term goals, while recommended action steps are intended to help
the region reach those goals.

Regional Overview:
The 1999 Regional Overview reviews the Buffalo Niagara region's demographic,
economic, geographic, and political attributes (and was updated in 2002).
It is intended to serve as a foundation of understanding for the State of
the Region's performance assessments.
