The UB Regional Institute received the 2009 Innovation in Regional Planning Award from the Western New York section of the American Planning Association for its tourism planning efforts for seven rural municipalities in southern Erie County. “Partnering for Tourism Development in the Southtowns of Erie County,” a collaboration between the institute and the Southtowns Community Enhancement Coalition, produced two new planning tools for the towns of Brant, Eden, Evans and North Collins. Recognized for quality, originality, transferability, implementation, comprehensiveness and effectiveness were "Sowing the Seeds for Southtowns Agribusiness," an assessment of current agritourism practices in the Southtowns with recommendations for developing the market, and a "Tourism Toolkit," evaluating the full range of tourism assets in the four-town area. Rachel M. Teaman, the institute's Director of Regional Initiatives, and Brenda A. Stynes, Graphic and Information Designer, were recognized along with the UB Regional Institute for the exemplary products that resulted from this project.
